I have not been able to listen to morning (on the west coast) talk radio at all this week, which is a huge bummer, as Steyn filled in for Rush yesterday and today. I always love Steyn guest-hosting days, for he says the most delightfully offbeat things, as well as providing solid cultural and political insight. And he’s so damn funny.
From the highlights page over at Rush’s site comes this:
“The end of men is now official. Women no longer need men to reproduce. A race of giant lesbians will bestride the earth, though they may keep one or two housetrained metrosexuals around the place as domestic pets to cut the lawn.” — Mark Steyn
which again makes me regret missing the show today. It stinks, but that’s life.

I did hear that blip and immediately wondered if Mark Steyn was a Futurama fan. Amazon Women in the Mood was an excellent episode which centered upon a race of giant women who followed a “femputer” like it was some sort of goddess. Here’s a clip (note that “‘Snu Snu’ is sex):
But are metrosexuals up to the task – mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage, killing spiders? That’s all so “eeeeeewww”! And wouldn’t their presence be a source of concern to the non-butch half of the population? Also, wouldn’t they…………… never mind – I think my concerns are in definite need of reordering but Steyn has a knack for relieving the high anxiety of post modern concerns, i.e. things can always be worse – and funnier, in a post funny way.
You could never dispense with women. Even if you could reproduce eggs, fertilize them and pass the nine months of in-utero development in an incubator (to avoid the discomfort and inconvenience, of course), you still could never dispense with women. Their love of things creative and beautiful, the way they move their hands when they talk, the things they say and consider important. You could never dispense with women. We are not powerless before them, we just don’t like living without them. Which means we have to give up certain things and put some things aside, sacrifice some aspects of our lives to help make their lives more fulfilled. It’s good for us.
I believe the inverse to be true as well, but our culture is a long time coming to that conclusion.
Nicholas: So are you saying the only reason for us to be kept around any more is so that we may adore them? ;)
Sigh.
I am hoping that we will eventually be seen as valued, but we tend to adore them regardless.
And why not? I think we were made that way, and I, for one, am glad of it.
Although I’m familiar with the Futurama episode referenced, and didn’t listen to Steyn on the radio, it does sound like he is riffing off an old P.J. O’Rourke (I’m quoting/paraphrasing from memory) bit about how children shouldn’t be deprived of the sight of an unshaven male in all his unshaven glory lounging around on a sofa in his boxer shorts, and that a few of these specimens should be kept in zoos.
Ah, yaknow, I didn’t realize the reference wasn’t in there.
Steyn was reporting that [apparently] sperm was created in a lab from only embryonic stem cells. So tongue planted firmly in cheek, he recited the lines April quoted.
Here’s the man-obsoleting story:

Seriously though: Is there really a lack of sperm on this world where it must be created in a lab?
That’s a great one, E! The professor’s just screwing around in the lab, isn’t he?
(Professor Nayeria, that is. Not our own Professor McPherson).
